Put simply, a concussion changes the way our brain functions – causing it to work less optimally. It may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body with an “impulsive” force transmitted to the head.
Signs and symptoms of a concussion are broad and include: fatigue, slowed mental processing, concentration deficits, headaches, dizziness, gait and balance disturbance, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, trouble focusing, memory impairment, irritability, anxiety, depression, and many more.
This means our assessments must be comprehensive and consist of various tools such as:
- Balance and coordination testing
- Neurological testing
- Evaluation of visual motor skills
- Vestibular testing
- Gait assessment
- Orthopaedic assessment of secondary injuries
- Exercise tolerance testing
Concussion recovery requires rehabilitation and reintegration. Rehab is finding that balance between what’s too much and what’s not enough. Your body and brain adapts to the stress you put on it. This is how you heal and build resiliency!
