Massage therapy is a versatile and effective treatment that addresses a wide range of conditions, helping patients manage pain, recover from injuries, and improve overall well-being.
At our clinic, Michelle Cousins, a highly skilled Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), brings her extensive training and holistic approach to provide tailored care for each client. With certifications in advanced techniques such as craniosacral therapy, kinesiotaping, and reflex integration, Michelle’s treatments are designed to address both the physical and systemic factors that contribute to pain and dysfunction. Her skillful and varying methods benefit neuro conditions and are used to empower and promote long-term health.
About Michelle Laura Cousins
Michelle completed her Master Massage Therapy training certification in Tempe, Arizona, at the Southwest Institute for Healing Arts in 2013, where she received training in both massage techniques and other holistic modalities. She also received her yoga teacher training at the Spirit of Yoga in Tempe, Arizona in 2014. Michelle has taken a wide spectrum of additional trainings all across the United States, including aromatherapy, cranial sacral therapy, reflex integration, rhythmic movement, cold laser therapy, and kinesiotaping (level I & II). While in the US she maintained an active bodywork practice predominantly in craniosacral therapy and reflexology, and attained her CST designation with the Upledger Institute in 2013.
Michelle returned to Toronto in 2014, and obtained her RMT in 2017. In keeping with her interest in nervous system function, fascia, and functional movement, and her commitment to ongoing training, she has received additional training in yin yoga, restorative yoga, as well as is a Graston Techniques specialist.
Over the last several years, Michelle has worked primarily in rehabilitative settings with clients with complex healthcare needs, including moderate to severe neurological impairments and complex orthopaedic injuries. She has worked with a wide array of clients, including athletes, children, and elderly clients.
Sciatica, Femoral Nerve Entrapment, and Nerve Impingements
Nerve-related conditions, such as sciatica, femoral nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), can significantly impact mobility and quality of life. Michelle’s approach focuses on soft tissue release techniques to alleviate nerve compression and improve circulation.
She works layer by layer, using fascia release, trigger point therapy, and stretching to reduce tension and enhance mobility. Graston therapy is often incorporated to remodel scar tissue and improve tissue health. These techniques, combined with a sustainable remedial exercise program, are highly effective in supporting the healing process. By partnering with our physiotherapists, Michelle ensures a comprehensive plan that addresses both the immediate symptoms and the underlying causes of nerve impingement.
Rotator Cuff Injuries and Frozen Shoulder
Rotator cuff injuries, including tears, tendonitis, and frozen shoulder, are common among middle-aged individuals and athletes engaged in repetitive motion sports such as skiing, tennis, and golf. Michelle’s treatments for these conditions involve soft tissue release, fascial lengthening, and tissue remodeling to restore mobility and reduce pain.
Her approach emphasizes client education and active participation. Through passive and active-assisted range-of-motion exercises, stretching, and strengthening techniques (isometric, eccentric, and concentric) alongside her massage techniques, clients learn how to minimize the risk of re-injury and ensure steady progress. Hydrotherapy and rest are also incorporated to optimize healing and tissue recovery.
Plantar Fasciitis and the Posterior Chain
Plantar fasciitis, a common condition causing heel pain, often requires targeted treatment of the entire posterior chain to address the root cause. Michelle utilizes fascia release, muscle stripping, and pin-and-glide techniques to relieve tension in the affected tissues. By engaging and loading the muscles during treatment, she helps clients regain function and reduce pain. These hands-on methods are complemented by remedial exercises that promote tissue balance and prevent recurrence.
Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation for Young Athletes
Injury prevention and recovery are vital for young athletes in sports like baseball, hockey, and dance. Michelle’s prehabilitation and rehabilitation programs are tailored to the specific demands of each sport. Her treatments focus on restoring tissue balance through soft tissue release and targeted exercises.
By addressing muscle imbalances and improving flexibility, young athletes can enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury. Michelle’s holistic approach also incorporates education to help athletes develop better movement patterns and maintain long-term physical health.
Complex Conditions: Strokes, Spinal Cord Injuries, and More
Massage therapy plays a crucial role in managing complex conditions such as strokes, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and amputations. Michelle’s treatments vary based on the client’s stage of healing, overall health, and tissue condition. Passive and active techniques, circulatory methods, and range-of-motion exercises are used to improve mobility, circulation, and tissue health.
In cases of neurological conditions like functional neurological disorders (FND) and Parkinson’s disease, Michelle combines soft tissue release with remedial exercises, mindfulness, and yoga-inspired somatic movement. This dynamic approach supports both physical recovery and mental well-being, empowering clients to take an active role in their rehabilitation.
Addressing the “Hardware and Software” of the Body
Michelle’s philosophy goes beyond treating the physical symptoms of an injury or condition. She delves into the “hardware” (muscles, joints, and tissues) as well as the “software” (nervous system functioning and muscle patterning) to address the root causes of dysfunction. By incorporating mindfulness, breathwork, and client education, she helps clients develop an awareness of their movement patterns and lifestyle factors that may contribute to imbalances.
This detective-like approach ensures that treatments are not only effective but also sustainable, encouraging clients to take ownership of their health. Michelle’s ultimate goal is to restore balance, improve function, and empower clients to lead healthier, pain-free lives.
Specific Techniques and Their Benefits
- Craniosacral Therapy: This gentle, hands-on technique targets the craniosacral system to relieve tension, improve circulation, and enhance the body’s natural healing processes. It’s particularly beneficial for conditions like migraines, TMJ disorders, and stress-related tension.
- Kinesiotaping: Kinesiotape provides support to injured areas while allowing for a full range of motion. It can help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and enhance proprioception, making it ideal for both acute injuries and chronic conditions.
- Reflex Integration and Rhythmic Movement: These techniques address neurological and developmental issues by improving coordination, balance, and motor skills. They are especially effective for clients recovering from strokes or brain injuries.
- Fascial Release: By targeting the connective tissue, fascial release improves mobility, reduces pain, and enhances overall function. This technique is particularly useful for conditions like plantar fasciitis, sciatica, and frozen shoulder.
Massage Therapy and Physiotherapy: A Collaborative Approach
Michelle’s treatments work seamlessly alongside physiotherapy to provide comprehensive care. While massage focuses on soft tissue release and relaxation, physiotherapy targets movement patterns, joint stability, and strength. Together, these therapies create a well-rounded approach that addresses the root causes of pain and dysfunction.
For example, a client recovering from a herniated disc might receive massage therapy to reduce muscle tension and improve circulation, followed by physiotherapy to strengthen the core and stabilize the spine. This collaboration ensures faster recovery and long-term success.
Massage therapy is a powerful tool for healing and wellness, and Michelle’s approach exemplifies the best of what this field has to offer. By combining hands-on techniques with client education and holistic care, she helps clients not only recover but thrive. Michelle offers massage treatments with a rehabilitative and therapeutic focus, and is committed to client education and empowerment through remedial exercise education. With a wide array of skills to draw upon, Michelle is committed to supporting you achieve your wellness goals. Book with Michelle at our Bloor West location!
